Addiction and Relapse Prevention Treatment and Management

Substance use disorders are medical conditions that affect brain function, behavior, and the ability to maintain control over substance use despite negative consequences. Addiction can interfere with physical health, mental health, relationships, employment, and overall functioning. Without appropriate management, symptoms may recur in cycles of remission and relapse.

I provide psychiatric evaluation and non-MAT medication management for substance use disorders, as well as relapse prevention following detoxification, residential treatment, or intensive outpatient programs. Treatment is individualized and based on a careful assessment of substance use history, psychiatric comorbidities, medical factors, and prior treatment response, with the goal of supporting sustained recovery and long-term stability.

Common Features of Substance Use Disorders

Substance use disorders may present differently depending on the substance involved and individual circumstances. Common features include:

  • Loss of control over substance use

  • Cravings or urges to use substances

  • Continued use despite negative personal, medical, or occupational consequences

  • Difficulty maintaining abstinence after periods of sobriety

  • Withdrawal symptoms or post-acute withdrawal effects

  • Co-occurring mood, anxiety, trauma-related, or sleep disorders

  • Impaired concentration, motivation, or judgment

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation helps clarify diagnosis, identify contributing factors, and guide appropriate treatment planning.

Treatment Approach

Addiction is best managed using a structured, evidence-based psychiatric approach that addresses both substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. Treatment focuses on stabilization, relapse prevention, and long-term management rather than short-term symptom control alone.

This practice does not provide opioid agonist therapy or maintenance-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT). When clinically appropriate, non-MAT psychiatric medications may be used to support mood stabilization, anxiety management, sleep regulation, and reduction of relapse risk. Medication decisions are made thoughtfully and reviewed regularly to support safety, effectiveness, and sustained recovery.

Psychiatric treatment is provided via secure telehealth, allowing for ongoing monitoring, medication adjustments, and consistent follow-up over time.

Next Steps

If substance use or relapse risk is interfering with daily functioning or recovery goals, a psychiatric evaluation can help determine whether non-MAT treatment and relapse prevention strategies may be appropriate.
